US: Drone attack targets US base in Syria, no casualties

Beirut — A compound run by U.S. forces and U.S.-backed Syrian opposition fighters was attacked with drones in eastern Syria on Monday, the U.S. military said, causing no casualties or damage.

The military said the attack took place in the area of the Al-Tanf base, which is near the border between Syria, Jordan and Jordan. Iraq There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

US and coalition forces are in al-Tanf to train Syrian forces on patrols to combat Islamic State group militants. The base is also on a road that serves as an important link for Iranian-backed forces stretching from Tehran to Lebanon.

A military statement said coalition forces coordinated with opposition fighters – known as Maghawir al-Thoura – “to respond to an attack carried out by several unmanned aerial systems in the area of al-Tanf Garrison on Monday morning”.

It said the army successfully engaged one of the drones to contain its impact while the other drone exploded in an anti-military compound, causing “zero casualties or damage.” Other drone strikes have not been successful, it added.

Major General John Brennan, commander of the Joint Joint Task Force, condemned the drone strike. “Such attacks put the lives of innocent Syrian civilians at risk and undermine the vital efforts of our partner forces to sustain the lasting defeat of ISIS,” he said, using an acronym for the Islamic State group.

The attack came hours after Israeli airstrikes in western and central Syria killed three soldiers, wounded three and caused material damage.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an anti-Syrian war monitor, said the Israeli strikes hit Syrian army positions where Iran-backed fighters are stationed.

Drone strikes on al-Tanf have become rare.

In October last year, US officials said they believed Iran was behind a drone strike in al-Tanf that month, which involved five drones packed with explosives. It said the drones hit both sides of the US al-Tanf garrison and Syrian opposition forces positions.

The October attacks came days after Israeli airstrikes in central Syria.
