Ukraine Forces Say They Wiped Out Elite Wagner HQ in Donbas

Skilled but sketchy mainstay Wagner groupThe Private paramilitary Helping Vladimir Putin Waging war in UkraineAccording to sources on both the Ukrainian and Russian sides, the attack took place.

This is unclear How many fighters? Many were injured or killed in the attack, believed to have been carried out over the weekend using the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, which is made for the US military and donated to Ukraine.

“There is no longer a Wagner headquarters in Popsna,” Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksiy Honcharenko wrote on Facebook, referring to the camp’s location in the Luhansk region of Russian-controlled Ukraine. “Thank you Himars and the Armed Forces of Ukraine!”

The Kremlin has not confirmed the group’s existence or its role as defined by Western intelligence sources, who say most of the fighters are recruited from Russian prisons. Some reports indicate that convicted killers are being pardoned in exchange for six months of fighting in Ukraine.

The first news of the base camp location came on August 8, when Russian propaganda war correspondent Sergei Sreda visited the site and posted a selfie with Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian oligarch known as “Putin’s chef”, who manages elite paramilitary assassins.

Some reports on Monday suggested that Prigozhin had not been heard from since he was seen in the camp, but the suggestion that he was killed in the attack is just one glimmer of hope for Ukrainians.

The photos posted by Sreda were undoubtedly meant to show Russia flexing its muscles, as reports of mass casualties to counter Russian propaganda on the progress of the war. But instead, they inadvertently exposed key geo-markers, including a bomb shelter identified by the Ukrainian military. The images were quickly removed from Telegram, but not before Ukrainian technicians had geolocated them with sufficient accuracy to carry out an assault.

Several Russian Telegram channels confirmed the hit on Sunday, although details about the unit’s actual damage were unclear. Wagner forces have been active in the Crimea and Donbass regions since 2014 and have been deployed to back Putin allies and Russian interests in Syria, Libya, Mali as well as the Central African Republic.
