Multan, Pakistan — Thirteen people were killed and five injured when a truck overturned and fell on a passenger van in eastern Pakistan during heavy rain, officials said on Sunday.
Riasat Ali, senior administrative officer of Liaquat Pur in Punjab province, said the incident took place late on Saturday night near Feroja town during heavy rains. A truck loaded with sacks of sugar overturned and fell on the van.
Ali said the van was crushed under the heavy load and rescue workers could only pull out five seriously injured passengers alive. He said the dead were pulled out of the wreckage where the workers had turned. The truck driver was not involved in the accident.
Bad road conditions, lack of safety awareness and disregard for traffic rules often lead to fatal traffic accidents in Pakistan.
