Timeline: Israel’s attacks on Gaza since 2005

The following timeline lists major attacks by Israeli forces on Gaza since the 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave home to 2.3 million people:

August 2005 – 38 years after taking over Gaza from Egypt, the Israeli army abandoned the settlements and left them under the control of the Palestinian Authority.

January 2006 – Hamas, an armed group, wins a majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Assembly elections.

June 2006 – Hamas captures Israeli army recruit Gilad Shalit in a raid across the border from Gaza, leading to Israeli airstrikes and infiltration.

December 2008 – Israel launched a 22-day military offensive in Gaza after firing rockets at the southern Israeli city of Sderot. About 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed before a ceasefire was agreed.

November 2012 – Israel kills Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabari, followed by eight days of Israeli airstrikes on Palestine.

July-August 2014 – 2,100 Palestinians, including 73 Israelis, including 67 soldiers, have been killed in the seven-week war in Gaza after Hamas kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers.

March 2018 – Palestinian protests broke out on Gaza’s fenced border with Israel, and Israeli forces opened fire to keep them back. Clashes between Hamas and Israeli forces have killed more than 170 Palestinians during months of protests.

May 2021 – After weeks of tension during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, hundreds of Palestinians have been injured by Israeli security forces at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem. Hamas demanded that Israel withdraw its security forces from the compound. Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza in response to rocket fire from Gaza.
