The ‘world’s coolest’ streets for 2022 revealed by Time Out

(CNN) – When it comes to fashion, street style has as much cachet as runway style — in fact, there are dozens of blogs and Instagram accounts dedicated to chronicling the best streetwear looks.

Because the urban glitterati always begins on the streets, where people of all classes and backgrounds can mix with each other on their way to work, school, home and entertainment.

This year, Time Out – the media and hospitality brand that publishes local guides to some of the world’s most interesting cities – has released its second annual roundup. The most beautiful roads in the world.

More than a neighborhood, a single street can define a city’s culture.

“In much of the world, pre-pandemic life has returned with a bang. People are excitedly making plans and getting out and about in their own cities and city breaks again,” James Manning, travel editor of Time Out, said in a statement. “Our list of the world’s coolest roads includes key routes that locals — including our expert editors and contributors — recommend driving down right now.”

There are 33 roads on this year’s list, three more than the inaugural round in 2021. It also includes several new cities including Taipei, Mumbai, Athens and Accra.

North America

Rue Wellington in Montreal’s Verdun neighborhood tops this year’s list.

Time Out Canada editor Laura Osborne says the street has “killer cocktail bars, stellar brunch spots, some of the best sandwiches in town, and even a sandy urban beach,” plus it’s slated to become pedestrian-only in 2023, which will undoubtedly make it quieter. points

Although the United States didn’t come out on top, most streets on the list — Miami’s Calle Ocho, New York City’s McDougal Street (a perennial favorite Dante’s Cocktail Bar) and Chicago’s Wentworth Avenue all intersect.

Mexico’s representative on this list is Avenida Amsterdam in Mexico City’s hip Condesa neighborhood.

Asia and the Pacific

Karangahape Road -- as the locals call it "K-Road" -- ranks sixth in Oakland.

Five of the top 10 roads are in the region.

Melbourne, Australia topped the 2021 list with Smith Street but slipped to second place this year. The city’s Gertrude Street made the list, described by Time Out Australia’s Eliza Campbell as “pretty, unassuming and free from the gaudy nightlife of its relatively rowdy siblings”.

Coming in at number seven is Tai Ping Shan, a neighborhood-within-a-town on Hong Kong’s main island.

CNN digital producer Rhea Mogul, who lives on the street, says the best things about living there are the dog-friendly cafes and “a great mix of old and new.” Tai Ping means “peace and stability” in Cantonese while Shan means “hill”.

A high-profile debut for 2022 is Taipei’s Yongkang Street, home to craft beer maker Zhang Men Brewing.

“We have put together various resources to promote this neighborhood to international tourists, and we are very happy that it has been listed,” Huang Shih-fang, director of the Taiwan Tourism Board’s international affairs department, told CNN. “We hope to bring tourists back to the area once the borders open.”

Time Out, which is headquartered in London, looked closer to home for some of its picks this year. The coolest street in the British capital in 2022 is Deptford High Street, a mix of street stalls, markets, shops, bars and more, which Time Out editor Chris Wavell says is not only London’s coolest street but its “liveliest”.

Further north, Glasgow’s Great Western Road is the UK’s most accessible, coming in third.

and Denmark’s metropolis of Copenhagen — which CNN Travel called “Europe’s new capital of cold“Last year — came in at number five. With wine and cheese shops and plenty of fresh flowers, the editors of Time Out dubbed Vernedamswegs Street a “mini Paris.” So Paris suffers, which didn’t actually make the list.

Other European streets making a shout on the 2022 list are Kolokotroni in Athens, Calle Echegare in Madrid and Capel Street in Dublin.

Of the last of those three, Dublin-based travel writer Nicola Brady says Capel — which rhymes with “maple” — “feels like a proper slice of old Dublin.”

She adds that the street, which was pedestrianized earlier this year, “has small hardware stores and pubs that have been around for decades alongside great Korean and Vietnamese restaurants that are new to the scene.”
