WINDSOR, Sept 10 (Reuters) – Prince Harry and his wife Meghan walked with William and wife Kate through crowds near Windsor Castle on Saturday after the death of their grandmother Queen Elizabeth, raising the prospect of a friendship between the brothers.

King Charles’ two sons, Harry and Meghan, stepped out in recent years after their mother Diana died in a Paris car crash in 1997, giving up their royal titles to move to the United States.

The couple were on a brief visit to Britain when Britain’s longest-reigning queen died on Thursday.

Like other senior members of the royal family, Harry rushed to the Queen’s side as her condition worsened at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and a spokesman for the heir to the throne said William had extended the invitation for the Windsor Walk.

A royal source described it as an important show of unity during an incredibly difficult time for the family. They came out of the same car, all dressed in black.

The two couples did not interact much during the 40-minute walk near the Queen’s favorite English home, as they stopped to read messages left among flowers and shook hands and chatted with thousands of people lined up for the long walk.

“I think it really drew a line under what happened historically, and it’s a really strong sense of unity within the royal family. It was really cool to see,” said Raj Kaur, 41, who was in the crowd. .

At one point Meghan was hugged by a woman in the crowd while others stretched to shake hands and speak with the four royals during the evening. William spent some time chatting with the children, while Kate and Harry accepted flowers and messages of encouragement from people in the crowd.

On Friday, Charles used his first address to the nation as king to “express his love for Harry and Meghan as they live their lives abroad”.

He also bestowed upon William and daughter-in-law Kate the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, which he and his late wife Diana had previously held.

William was heard telling a well-wisher that the days following the Queen’s death had been “very surreal”.

“We all thought she was invincible,” he said.

Asked by someone else in the crowd how his children, George, 9, Charlotte, 7, and Louis, 4 – who started at a new school on the day of the Queen’s death – were coping, he replied: “The children are fine, thank you. They are fine. It is not appropriate to start a new school after everything has happened.”

According to royal rules, the monarch’s grandchildren are automatically eligible to become princes or princesses, so now that Harry’s father, Charles, is King, his children, Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, could receive the titles. Lilibet was named after the queen’s childhood nickname.

It is not clear whether they will take the degrees.

“At the moment we are focused on the next 10 days. We will update the (royal) website as we have information,” a spokesman for Charles told reporters.
