North Korea soldiers in Ukraine would be logistical ‘mess’ Putin won’t ‘allow’: Russia expert

The spate of Russian deaths and reports that Russia is now looking to North Korea to help its flagged troops raised eyebrows this week as some began to question whether Moscow would drag Pyongyang into its war in Ukraine.

Russia expert and former intelligence officer In Russian Theory and Policy For the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Rebecca Koffler threw cold water on the claims, calling them “inconceivable”.

“The Russian propaganda machine may say that 100,000 North Korean volunteers will fight on behalf of Russia, just to scare the West, but in reality, this is false information,” she said in response to questions from Fox News Digital.

Report North Korea is making such a claim The possibility that Russia could send as many as 100,000 troops to aid its campaign in Ukraine began circulating on Western and Russian news sites this week after the pro-Kremlin Regnum news agency published an article earlier this month.

The August 2 article stated that “North Korea has made it clear through diplomatic channels that it is willing to assist the LPR. [Luhansk People’s Republic] and DPR [Donetsk People’s Republic] To strengthen the defense[s]and is “ready to transfer up to 100,000 of its troops.”

“Pyongyang will be able to transfer its tactical units to Donbas,” the article continued.

The report never detailed whether the news outlet obtained the “diplomatic channel” referred to in the report, but instead pointed to comments made by a Russian member who championed it. Pyongyang’s alleged desire to help.

North Korea backed Russia and three other nations in March when they voted against a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

But Koffler said Pyongyang’s support for Russian President Vladimir Putin did not mean the Kremlin chief would allow North Korea to send troops on the ground in Ukraine.

“Putin will never accept – it’s unworkable,” she said. “Just think of the sheer scale of it.”

Except for the fact that Russia and North Korea have not conducted joint combat training and Pyongyang has not seen it In decades of active fighting, The logistics of such an alliance would be difficult.

“The command-and-control aspect of it is impossible. They don’t speak Russian,” Koffler said of the average North Korean soldier. “How are they going to use Russian weapons systems?”

Russia launched an Iranian satellite into space and feared it would be used to survey Ukraine
“It will confuse more than help,” she added.

As Russian casualties continue to mount in Ukraine and Moscow continues joint military exercises with neighboring Belarus, some are worried that Putin will add to his fighting force with Minsk’s help.

But Koffler said Belarus is not as threatened by a war in Ukraine as North Korea is.

“Remember, Belarusians, Chechens, Buryats, anyone from the former Soviet Union speaks Russian,” she said. “They are more integrated. They not only have similar, what we call strategies, techniques and procedures, but theoretically they are on the same page. [in their] War-Fighting Theory.”

Koffler said North Korea could be used to help Russia in its reconstruction efforts in eastern Ukraine if Moscow succeeds in preventing Kiev from retaking occupied territory.

The Russia expert also suggested that Moscow is looking to Pyongyang to help its military with more advanced weapons such as the KN-25 – which is superior to the US HIMARS – in the face of Western arms supplies to Ukraine.

“It’s a real value added by North Korea that Putin will approve and that’s admirable,” Koffler said.
