Seoul, South Korea
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday oversaw the launch of a “new type” of an intercontinental ballistic missile, accompanied by his young daughter, whose existence had not previously been confirmed.
Shocking photographs released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) show Kim holding hands with a girl as they sit on a mobile launch platform near an ICBM.
KCNA claimed the “new” missile seen by the pair was a Hwasong-17 and said it was flying 999.2 kilometers (621 miles) over Pyongyang’s international airspace.
Japan warned after Friday’s launch that the new missile has the potential to reach the mainland United States.
Kim said it was to “clearly demonstrate” his country’s ability to respond to “frenzied aggressive war drills carried out by enemies seeking to destroy peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” according to a KCNA report.
“Kim Jong Un solemnly declared that if enemies continue to threaten the DPRK, launching repeated nuclear strikes, our party and government will resolutely respond with nuclear weapons and all-out conflict with all-out conflict,” KCNA said.
Friday’s launch, which landed about 210 kilometers (130 miles) west of the Japanese island of Oshima, was not the first time North Korea had fired an ICBM that experts and officials assessed could theoretically reach the United States, according to Japanese officials.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Friday’s missile was lower in altitude and range than Pyongyang’s missile test on March 24, which recorded the highest altitude and longest duration of any North Korean missile ever tested. The missile reached an altitude of 6,248.5 kilometers (3,905 miles) and flew a distance of 1,090 kilometers (681 miles), KCNA reported.
And in 2017, then-US Defense Secretary James Mattis said that a missile North Korea launched that year showed the ability to hit “everything in the world”.
Despite the missile’s theoretical range, Pyongyang’s ability to carry a nuclear warhead and deliver it to a target remains unproven.
Ballistic missiles are fired into space before returning to Earth. Experts have yet to find conclusive evidence that North Korea could have a weapon capable of successfully re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
Kim’s threats to the US and South Korea were also nothing new.
North Korea’s leader after a missile test in October Warned adversaries that its nuclear forces were fully prepared for “real war”.
“Our nuclear combat forces … have once again proven their full readiness for actual war to bring the enemy under their control,” Kim said in a KCNA report.
Little is known about the private life of Kim Jong Un or his family.
Saturday’s news report did not name Kim’s daughter, who was seen in state media for the first time. But in 2013, former basketball star Dennis Rodman told Britain’s The Guardian newspaper that Kim had a “baby” named “Ju A.”
Rodman said time spent With the family, Kim was described as “a good dad” and spoke to Kim’s wife, Ri Sol Joo.
“I held their baby Joo A and also spoke to Ms Ri,” he told the newspaper.
Speculation in 2012 that Rhee might be pregnant was sparked by state media photos showing her wearing a long coat that could hide a bump. But the North Korean officials kept silent about it.
State media did not announce Kim and Ri’s wedding As of July 2012According to South Korean intelligence, the marriage was believed to have taken place three years later.
But that changed in 2018, when North Korean state media awarded her the new title of “respectable first lady,” a step up from the previously used “comrade” and, analysts say, a sign that she is gaining her own persona. Sect
Kim and Ri have it three children Collectively, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).
North Korea has been ruled as a hereditary dictatorship since its founding in 1948 by Kim Il Sung. After his father’s death in 1994, his son Kim Jong Il took power. And 17 years after Kim Jong Il died, Kim Jong Un took power.
