Police are investigating after being called to reports of human remains found in a suitcase bought at an auction at a storage facility here. New Zealand.
It is understood that the remains were found among items in a storage container bought by a suspected family, and police may be dealing with multiple remains, Newshub reported.
The police have started a murder investigation and efforts are on to identify the remains. Police do not believe the family was involved in the incident.
DI Tofilau Faamuanaia Vaaelua said residents of the Auckland home called police when they found the remains after they “brought an unknown property to their address”.
Police did not comment further, saying an autopsy was underway.
“We appreciate that there is public interest in what happened, however given the nature of the search, there are still many inquiries to be made,” Famanuia Velua said.
“The priority for the police is to identify the deceased so that we can establish the full circumstances behind the discovery.
“This will also advise the next of kin. Given the nature of the search, this may take some time.”
There is no immediate danger to the public, he said.
A neighbor told Newshub: “I feel bad for the family because they have nothing to do with it. And whoever did it, come forward. It’s a bit unfair, bro. This is terrible. “
News website Content reported Other neighbors noticed a “foul smell” coming from the property on Thursday, shortly before police arrived.
Another neighbor said she saw her son remove a suitcase from a trailer on the property and take it to the forensics tent.
Detectives and forensics teams appeared shocked, she said.
