American tourist raped in public toilet in central Paris

A 23-year-old man has been charged and remanded in custody after allegedly raping an American tourist in a public toilet in central Paris, causing shockwaves in a bustling riverside neighborhood thought to be safe.

The 27-year-old was out with her partner on Saturday night along the Seine River in the heart of Paris’ tourist district, not far from Notre Dame Cathedral and Paris City Hall.

A riverside promenade is central to the summer program on Paris’s Right Bank, Paris beachesAnd busy both day and night, tourists and Parisians head out for evening drinks or picnics by the river.

Shortly after 1 a.m., the woman stopped to use a public toilet near the Louis-Philippe bridge in the 4th arrondissement. The restroom, not far from a local bar, is considered safe and well-maintained. When the riverside area became car-free six years ago, it was part of the new facilities.

Local paper Le Parisien reported that the woman’s partner was waiting for her but worried that she was taking too long. He went to the toilet and heard crying, only to find that his companion had been attacked.

Security guards in the area came to help and police arrested the man, who lives in Asnieres-sur-Seine, outside Paris. In initial police interviews, he denied rape and said the woman had consented.

The woman was rushed to a Paris hospital. After giving evidence to the police, she and her partner returned to the US.
