45 dead as Tropical Storm Nalgae hits Philippines | CNN


Tropical Storm Nalga has killed at least 45 people and injured dozens more in the Philippines, the country’s disaster agency said on Saturday.

14 more people are missing after this incident stormLocally known as Peng, it made landfall on Friday with sustained winds of 75 kilometers (46 miles) per hour.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council had announced a death toll of 72 before revising it. The group blamed an “overcount” by local officials for the initial figure, according to state media.

Southern provinces and cities were hit hardest by the storm. A “state of calamity” has been declared in the city of Cotabato on the island of Mindanao, where about 67,000 residents have been affected by the typhoon.

Upi, a nearby town of just 60,000 people, was inundated, the disaster council reported – forcing thousands to move to higher ground.

In all, officials said about 185,000 people across the country were affected by the storm, with more than 8,000 people temporarily homeless.

Photos and videos of search and rescue efforts showed bodies being pulled from water and thick mud and residents trapped on rooftops.

As Nalga cuts through the main island of Luzon and heads toward the South China Sea, the storm is likely to hit the capital Manila and nearby provinces over the weekend, state weather officials say.
